Victory! Crusaders Take Down Kuyper

Great Lakes pulled out their first points of the 2012 campaign Monday night with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Kuyper College under the lights at Davenport University.

Brandon Gregory and Matt Burk got the scoring going for GLCC, giving the Crusaders an early 2-0 advantage. The Cougars would respond with one to cut the deficit in half, only to see Anthony Zarwea finish one to make it a two-goal game once again.

Kuyper, however, would rally before the break and level the scoreline at three goals apiece by halftime.

The second half produced only one goal, but it would prove to be enough; Zarwea buried a well-struck free kick into the back of the net to give Great Lakes the slightest of margins at 4-3, which they would hold onto for the final half-hour to pull out their first win of the season.

Landon Koch, who logged his first win as a goalkeeper in the game, said it was "the best game we played as a team, we hustled the entire game."

"We went out to get that win at all cost." says Danny Buegar, "We were all determined to play well as a unit. We played hard and got the result!"

Next up for GLCC: An away date with the Warriors of Rochester College (NAIA) on October 2nd at 3 p.m.

Crusaders Fall To Calvin Reserves

The Calvin College (MAIA) reserves proved too much for Great Lakes, defeating the Crusaders on Saturday 6-1.
After allowing an early goal, the Crusaders answered with a goal from Jacob Embs in the 25th to level the scoreline. However, after both sides missed opportunities from the penalty spot, the tide definitely turned in Calvin's favour, as they scored a pair of goals in five minutes to enter the break up 3-1. The second half saw the Knights extend their lead with three goals over a dominant seconds half to round out a final scoreline of 6-1.
Next up for GLCC is the much-anticipated fixture with Kuyper College under the lights at Davenport.
"We didn't play to our full potential against Calvin and we know that," says Joey Whittaker, "But we are excited to play at Davenport and excited to get our first win there."
"We have what it takes to contend in the regionals as a team," says freshman Danny Beugar, "I am pretty sure about getting our first win on Monday. We have that desire to go out and get that win and we will!"

Rivalry Clash Ends In Disappointment For Men's Soccer

Losing to a rival is never enjoyable, but it stings all the more when it was such a close run thing.
GLCC came up short by a score of 2-0 in their rivalry clash with the Grace Tigers on Tuesday evening.

The match itself was very evenly matched, with both sides given plenty of opportunites to draw the first blood in the first half. However, largely due to the play of goalkeeper Doug Haggadone, the teams remained as they had started by the half.

It wasn't until the 66th minute when a Grace cross was deflected into the net by a Crusader defender that the scoreline was breached. Eleven minutes later Grace would be awarded a penalty that they converted, bringing the fulltime scoreline to 2-0.

"It was a close game," said GLCC head coach Justin Braman afterward, "It was pretty evenly matched, but it came down to we had our chances and didn't finish, and they had their chances and finished."

The team, however, seem unfased by the setback. "We are a cohesive and skilled team," says senior Joey Whittaker, "and I see a lot of potential in what we could accomplish this season. We just have to continue to make the little improvments and continue to work hard, and the wins will start rolling in."

Ladies' Volleyball Fall Short Against Grace

The GLCC Ladies' Volleyball team, who entered the contest winless through their first three matches, were unsuccsessful in their most recent bid for their first win of the season, falling in straight sets to Grace Bible College on Tuesday night.

After losing the first two sets, both by a score of 25-19, the girls, backed by their boisterous supporters, rallied from 13-7 down in the third game to level the score at 16 before Grace pulled out a 25-20 result to win the match.

"It could be better," says freshman LaDonte Tarrant, "But we're learning from each game and and we learn from every mistake."

"We've gotten better each game," adds Whitney Brazeal, "We've been close with Grace before and each game we come closer as a team."

As an additional positive note, by the third game of Tuesday's match, the GLCC fans had completed a 'wave' across the bleachers.

Crusaders Drop Region Opener

The Crusaders opened their NCCAA Division II Regional action Saturday against the other Crusaders, those of Maranatha Baptist Bible College, coming up short by a score of 3-1.

Although Maranatha garnered a quick 2-0 advantage, Great Lakes responded in the second half with a goal off of an Amavi Swarey free kick to the head of Brand0n Gregory, in his highly anticipated debut with the squad. Unfortunately for GLCC, Maranatha would add one more before full time, resulting in a 3-1 final.

Despite the loss, the Crusaders seem optimistic about what they see as a step in the right direction after a pair of sub-par performances to open the season.

“We played a lot better and moved the ball around well,” says freshman Matt Burk, “we had more chances at goal than the previous games, and the defence all around stepped up.”

According to team captain Doug Haggadone, the team just need to “worry about the next game and continue to get better.” That next fixture will come against rival Grace Bible College on the 11th of September at Henderson Field with a 5:00 p.m. kickoff
